Decorating with Garland – 5 Inspiring Ways
The festive season has officially started! With the arrival of December, it’s time to start finish decorating the home for Christmas!
It’s such a magical time of year with all the pretty lights and decorations, everything looks and feels more joyous.
When you think of Christmas decorations, what comes to mind first? Maybe it’s the Christmas tree, or pretty exterior decorations that pop up first. But have you considered using garland to enhance your Christmas decorations this year?
Garland adds an extra foliage element to your home during the festive season. What we love most about using garland is that there’s no limit to where and how you can use it!
In this article we’re going to take a look at 5 Ways to Decorate with Garland. We hope this inspires you to use more garland in your home this winter!
Fireplace Decorating
First up is decorating the home with garland in a traditional way, and that is using it for the fireplace mantle! The classic style is draping the garland on top of the mantle with both ends hanging down on either side of the fireplace. However you could get creative with this and extend one side up towards a mirror or piece of artwork above!
Once the garland is in place surrounding the fireplace you can get creative with adding red berries, baubles, bows, lights – the sky’s the limit!
Staircase Decor
Another traditional way of using garland to decorate your home is on the staircase! This involves attaching the garland to the handrail, or just below, to create a full foliage effect. You can either stick to just the handrail itself, or extend the ends down towards the floor where the staircase starts.

Doorways and Mirrors

Similarly to decorating the fireplace mantle, use the garland to drape over wall mirrors and decorate with baubles, bows, etc.
For doorways and openings, you can apply the same principle and add garland to the edges of the opening so the foliage frames the open space. This creates a festive opening, almost like a tunnel!
Tablescapes
Garland is fantastic for sprucing up the dinner table in December. Even if you’re not entertaining guests on Christmas Day this year, you can use garland for decorating your everyday dining table too.
We love to add garland down the center of rectangular dining tables and add extra decorative elements into it. Candlesticks are great for adding intermittently, while you could extra foliage pieces to enhance the look too. Simply drape the garland down the center of the table above a neutral colored table runner and build up the look from there!
For round dining tables, you can use garland to surround centerpieces. This could be a bowl full of baubles with garland surrounding it, or use a simple scented candle to enhance the ambience of the space.
Exterior Decorations
Last but not least – exterior decorations! Garlands are ideal for using to decorate the outside of our homes too.
You can use garland to decorate around windows, shutters, and even porches! Not to mention surrounding the front door too. If you have some railings on your porch, you could even add garland there and add some string lights to give a real winter wonderland look and feel.
