Bright Living Rooms

Many of the homeowners I’ve spoken to over the years have asked for advice on how to create a brighter living room. This could be because the room faces north (so there’s not much natural light coming in) or they simply want to update their living furniture for lighter pieces.

Creating a Bright Living Room is actually easier than you may think! And in this Shop the Look feature I’m going to share some of my designer secrets on Bright Living Rooms and how to create one in your own home.

Let’s take a closer look at Bright Living Rooms!

How to Recognize a Bright Living Room

A bright living room is one of those spaces you walk into and instantly get a feeling of light and airiness. This doesn’t necessarily mean that everything is white, sometimes there are dark finishes mixed in with neutral foundations. A living room with light colored furniture and accessories goes a long way to giving a light and bright feel to a living room. A bright living room may also feature some bright colors mixed in with a neutral and pale base.

Living Room Fun Facts:

Our living rooms have evolved greatly over the years. Back in the Victorian era, it was called the “death room” where the corpse of a loved one would be displayed and in later years, post-mortem photographs were taken. This was very common in both the USA and UK. But it wasn’t until 1910 that this room was renamed the “parlor” or “living room” in order to remove the negative associations surrounding death from the space.

In the 19th and 20th Centuries, the living room was used for socializing and gathering as a family. It was made into a comfortable room where everyone could relax, enjoy conversations, reading, and watching the television.

Today though, and with the increase of television shows and movies, the living room is one of the most important rooms of the house! It is central to every modern home and is used regularly by all the family. As such, many homeowners have taken to creating specific “looks” for their living room, with a Bright Living Room being the latest!
