Perfect Summertime Throws
The warmer weather is now settling in here in Chicagoland! The cold winter months are truly behind us and I’m glad to have all the winter gear stored away again. I don’t know about you though, I love accessorizing my living room with a throw blanket – even in the summer. While we may not use it often it’s great to accessorize the room along with decorative pillows. Let’s take a closer look at some of the perfect summertime throws!
Although throws and blankets are heavily associated with the winter and much colder weather, they are one of the key accessories that can help a living room or family room look well put together. For the summer months though, you’ll want to swap your thick knit throws or faux fur blankets for thinner ones made from cotton.
Blankets were first invented by Thomas Blanquette (blanket) a weaver who lived in England. Originating from the 14th century, they were made from wool and well known for their cozy and fire-resistant properties.
Over the years blankets have evolved and taken a more casual name of “throw” because they are sometimes literally thrown onto a sofa or armchair to dress the furniture. Of course, many blankets and throws still have the cozy and warmth originally associated with them but there is more emphasis on the decorative aspect of them. This means they will coordinate with the rest of the room’s decor through color, pattern, or texture.
Summer throws should be made from cotton where possible as they are breathable and allow good airflow.
This style often includes:
- Thin materials, i.e cotton
- Fun patterns or textures
- Coordinating color with the rest of the space
- Hung over the arm of the sofa or folded over the back or chaise
