These were easier to make, versatile for a number of different types of food, and could be made from an array of materials like wood, clay, and metal.

Using plates as decorative objects was hugely popular in the early 1900s when blue and white dinnerware became hugely popular. This calmed down for many years before recently making a comeback! Nowadays, many homeowners use decorative and stylish dishes to style their open shelving and cabinets.
