Traditional Dining Spaces
A key area of the home is a dining space. It’s somewhere for the whole family to get together for evening meals, and for entertaining guests! Even if you don’t entertain often, a traditional dining space is great for the everyday home. Sometimes it’s better to create spaces in the home that are functional and simpler in design, rather than going all out.
In this Shop the Look feature I’m going to share my top tips and ideas on creating the perfect Traditional Dining Spaces and talk through the key elements to include!
How to Recognize a Traditional Dining Space
Our dining rooms are used for a variety of activities these days, but traditionally the dining room was kept very simple. A table within the center of the room, with chairs surrounding it. There may have been storage furniture along the perimeter of the space, with the table dressed formally for eating.
A traditional dining space today is still as simple. The space has a central table with comfortable upholstered chairs.

A traditional dining space today is still as simple as it was many years ago. The space has a central table with comfortable upholstered chairs. Traditionally the dining table was wooden with ornate legs. You may even finding matching storage furniture to go with the table too! Although this isn’t a requirement if its not to your personal taste.
Dining Room Fun Facts:
Did you know that Historians believe the term “Dining Room” originates from the Ancient Greeks? There is also more recent evidence that suggests the first American home to have a dining room (a room specific for dining) dates back to 1772! Following this, having a dining room was reserved for the wealthy.
Nowadays, the dining room is used by all the family and is an integral part of any home! We all use our dining rooms differently, and it’s not necessarily exclusive for dining. These days we eat there, work there, and even socialize or do hobbies from the dining room! However the concept of the dining room still remains – a large table sits in the center of the room, with chairs surrounding it.
