Trend Alert: Undercounter Microwaves
It’s no secret that the team here at Innovatus Design we love to design kitchens! They require lots of problem-solving to create the best layout possible and each family’s needs are unique. We love making the magic happen! A hot topic in the design industry at the moment is around the placement of microwaves! And the latest interior design trend is Undercounter Microwaves.
This Trend Alert focuses on Undercounter Microwaves and we share our top design tips and considerations to take into account when choosing the best placement for a microwave in your home. Let’s take a closer look!

Why we love undercounter microwaves!
We love undercounter microwaves because they can be concealed out of sight (perhaps in an island) and this location provides easy access. Integrated undercounter microwaves aren’t for everyone, but they do bring the appliance down to a workable level (instead of being installed high up in the space) which is great for an ADA compliant space, as well as a home with kids who can use the microwave.
We regularly suggest undercounter microwaves to our clients purely because of the location being easier to use, and the risk of accidents with hot food is far less.

How to use Undercounter Microwaves.
Adding an undercounter microwave to your home is relatively straightforward!
If you have a kitchen island already it will be a case of selecting the right space for the microwave to be installed. This may require taking cabinet drawers or doors off or modifying carcasses for the microwave.
Alternatively, if you’re in the process of planning a new kitchen or pantry design it will be super easy to allow for an undercounter microwave. Position it to one side on either the kitchen island or pantry and ensure it is fully accessible.
What to watch out for with Undercounter Microwaves
There are some considerations to take into account when considering an undercounter microwave in your home…
Not all microwaves are suitable for integrated install so it is important to check on the specifications of the microwave whether it can be or not.
There must also be adequate ventilation for the microwave, i.e not a snug fit. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for ventilation as this may differ between models and manufacturers.
Ways to make Undercounter Microwaves last in your home
Undercounter microwaves can last a lifetime in your home!
As with any other appliance in the home, it’s important to consider it carefully. Ensure the integrated microwave has all the features you need as a minimum. You may also wish to stick with the same brand of appliances in your kitchen, although this is personal preference.
Above all, make sure you consult a professional about replacing aspects of any kitchen cabinetry for an integrated undercounter microwave as it may not be a suitable move for some existing kitchen set ups.
