5 Secrets for a Functional Bathroom – Designer’s Secrets Revealed!
Over the last two decades, I’ve had the privilege of working on some of the most beautiful home transformations! And one key space is the bathroom. It’s always on homeowner’s lists of remodels to do in their home and I’m lucky to have been a key part for many.
Through my experience there are some fundamental design principles I follow to maximize the space available. Storage is usually a top requirement from clients with bathroom projects and oftentimes creative solutions for this is a must!
So what secrets are there to maximizing a bathroom remodel and creating a functional bathroom?
Well, this article focuses on my top 5 Secrets for a Functional Bathroom! I hope you enjoy reading about some of the creative ways I’ve helped my clients to achieve a more functional bathroom.

1. Storage Towers
We used a storage tower in this bathroom remodel to increase the storage on this double vanity. The little drawers are perfect for small items that are regularly accessed, while the larger section is great for lotions and taller pieces.
We set this tower back slightly so there is still surface area in front of the tower for landing space and to keep the space feeling open.
We didn’t want this tower to completely overwhelm the sink area and this setback design helps avoid this, while providing extra storage for our clients.

2. Linen Storage
A huge issue in many homes is the lack of storage. Our clients had a similar issue where the only linen closet in this home was located in the kids’ bathroom down the hall. They desired towels to be closer to the primary bathroom, and we rose to the challenge!
We removed a makeup vanity and transformed the area into linen storage. They now have a place for all of their towels, toilet paper, and any extras they need closeby.
By creating this linen storage cabinet for our client, they can now utilize the space far better than before.

3. Pull-Out Makeup Tray
Often pull outs are seen in kitchens, but we decided to use a pull out in a new way!
In this compact bathroom, we included a platform that pulls out to put makeup and toiletries on when getting ready in the morning. This is a game-changer for our client and one we hope to introduce into more bathrooms in the future!

4. Vanity Niche
Back in the day, medicine cabinets were mounted to the side wall in many bathrooms. Hello 1980’s! Well, they had their moment, were nowhere in sight, and now transformed to something a little different.
You can see this stunning wood niche we custom designed for our client. The white oak is just stunning and we included a niche light for accents, a glass shelf for visibility, and a quartz ledge for durability. Countless details went into executing this niche to perfection and it paid off.
This vanity niche adds a luxurious quality to this compact bathroom and is ideal for displaying decorative items or perfumes.

5. Cabinet Pull-Out
Borrowing a common feature from kitchens again, we added a large pull out in the bottom of the vanity cabinet in this project. This helps to reach all the items at the back of the cabinet that often get lost.
This is an added extra that will come in useful in years to come.
