5 Ways to Style Bedding
In any bedroom, the bed itself is usually the main focal point of the space. This is why it’s important to style your bed and dress it well to give it a polished and designer look. Styling your bed can elevate the entire space to make it look and feel like a luxurious hotel room too.
No matter what your goals are with styling your bedroom, your bedding is where the magic begins! How you style your bedding sets the tone for the entire bedroom.
You may have just swapped your bedding for a new patterned set or chosen some plain linens, and are now stuck with how to style it effectively. This article will take you through 5 Ways to Style Bedding! From patterns to plains, these bedding styling tips will transform your bedroom.
Layering
The key way to style bedding is through the art of layering.
Think of it like the layers of a cake, only that each layer is a different piece of linen or fabric. The base layer will be the main sheets you choose, followed by a duvet or comforter, then pillows, decorative pillows, and blankets to finish.
If you follow the basic principle of layering bedding, you’re already halfway there to creating a hotel look and feel bedroom!
Bed Linens
Choose the highest thread count of cotton bedding that you can afford. The sheets you sleep in should be the best quality. Not only will this enable you to style the layers on top, these sheets will feel luxurious while you sleep.
If you can, choose a flat sheet so you can create hospital corners as the foot of the bed and fold the top of the sheet over your duvet layer. This will add extra dimension to the styling of your bedding.
Pillow Layers
In a similar way to layering the main bed linen on a bed, layering pillows can massively elevate the whole look!
There are a few different ways you can layer pillows on a bed, but we have a couple of favorites that we’re going to share here.
The Hotel-Look
- Rest the sleeping pillows vertically against the headboard
- Use three crisp white square shams in front
- And finish with two decorative pillows
The Simple and Laid-Back Look
- Rest two layers of sleeping pillows up against the headboard
- Use two large oversized decorative pillows in front
- Add a lumbar pillow to the center
Decorative Pillows
Soft and plump decorative pillows are great for pulling all the colors, pattern and texture from the bedroom into the styling of bedding. They will also create an inviting and luxurious bed.
Use a variety of sizes to create depth, while different textures can add interest to the bed. Try using two large pillows to prop up on your cushions and two or three smaller pillows to place in front of these.
Symmetry is key to keeping the overall bed looking sleek and considered so make sure to stand at the bottom of the bed! If your pillows start to flatten out you can always refresh the inserts to give them a new lease of life.
Blankets and Throws
Blankets and throws can easily add an extra dimension to your bedding. Fold a blanket or throw across the bottom of the bed to finish off the look. The throw should sit on the bottom third of the bed as this will create a layered look, showing off your duvet or comforter, while still giving your pillows space to be seen too.
If you don’t have a throw or would prefer not to have one, you can roll your duvet down to sit just underneath the main pillows. By doing this you can show off the underside of the duvet, and is particularly great if it’s patterned on both sides with a reversible design.
The great thing about using blankets and throws to style your bedding is their versatility. You can even try draping them over one corner of the bed for a fresh perspective!
