7 Swoonworthy Fireplaces
Fireplaces are not only a focal point for many living or family rooms, they add a functional element into the home too. Providing additional warmth and ambience in the winter months of the year, a fireplace is a fantastic component to any home.
Over the years I have designed countless fireplaces, built-ins that incorporate fireplaces, and even makeovers to fireplaces to enhance an existing setup or to add them where one wasn’t before. With winter taking hold here (gosh it just got cold!!) in Chicagoland I thought it was fitting to showcase the fireplaces we have designed over the years and explain more about what makes them special.
Let’s take a look at 7 Swoon-Worthy Fireplaces!
Downers Grove – New Construction Interior Design Project
For this Downers Grove new construction interior design project, we had the opportunity to get involved with the overall finishes throughout the home and help our clients to choose timeless finishes that will serve them well for many years.
We wanted to create a clean and classic look with the fireplace in the open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area. So we selected this perfect marble for their fireplace surround. It features natural veining that is really beautiful! We even hand-selected the pieces.
The hearth is flush with the main floor surface to give it a contemporary and seamless look. While the wood surround adds a timeless and beautiful look to bring it all together.
In this project, we also added some chevron paneling above the fireplace to give it more prominence and a sense of height.
Downers Grove – Family Room Remodel
For this family home in Downers Grove Illinois, we maintained the existing fireplace but gave it a facelift! Instead of the previous darker brickwork, we painted the brick a soft off-white color to give it a fresh and lighter look which is easier on the eye.
In addition to the fireplace makeover, we designed a new built-in which made the whole space feel larger and more pulled together with the rest of the space.
Above the fireplace, we used a subtle contrast so the brick detailing and mantle would stand out more. We used this soft sage green paint color for the rest of the walls and backs of the built-in to create a seamless and cohesive look.
Overall, the completed look is a fresh take on a traditional fireplace with a timeless and contemporary edge.
Contemporary Bell Shape Fireplace
In this particular fireplace design project in Naperville Illinois, we built a new modern and contemporary plastered fireplace. It features a modern bell shape that is highlighted with a new wooden mantle to add warmth and further texture into the space.
This project featured a new firebox so the whole fireplace element was new even though we were starting with an existing, dated fireplace.
Basement Family Room
We were thrilled to help design this basement family room for a long-standing client of ours in Downers Grove, Illinois. Previously it was a dark and unused space but the family enjoyed board games and watching sports and movies at the weekend. The final result is a well-loved space that is fit for purpose!
The existing fireplace needed a refresh so we painted the brick. This also meant we didn’t need to demolish anything. We created a beautiful façade for extra elegance and used some warm colored stone for the hearth.
We designed a long built-in to incorporate the fireplace so the family had extra storage and an area for displaying objects. We added some wall sconces above the fireplace for added sophistication and elegance. These sconces sit on either side of a large TV for the family to enjoy movie and game nights.
Texas “Design-From-A-Distance” Project
We designed this Dallas, Texas home remotely while we’re interior designers based here in Chicagoland. The clients wanted something modern and dark so we used a polished natural stone for the main fireplace area, had a linear gas fireplace installed and designed a modern built-in either side to bring everything together.
By using a dark natural stone we could also conceal a large TV within the fireplace wall a little easier. It’s definitely a statement wall!
Family Room Remodel
In this family room project in Aurora Illinois, we updated the fireplace wall to include storage and make it more family-friendly. The built-in on either side of the fireplace makes it easier for the family to store everything they need.
For the fireplace, we added brick for texture and to elevate the space. The room was very dark before, so we wanted to lighten everything up for them and freshen it up. The space is all light and bright now!
Living Room Refresh
In this Darien Illinois living room project, we used plaster finish to refresh the existing fireplace. This gave the room a more contemporary and clean look that makes it easier for our clients to work with in the future and it’s more inline with their style.
