Basement Reno Must Haves

Are you dreaming of transforming your basement into a functional space for your family? You’re not alone! Particularly here in the Chicago suburbs, many homes come with a basement. It’s no wonder that we have been called in to redesign many basements to help improve the use and efficiency of the space.

When we design basements for our clients, there are some common requests that come up. Each family we work with is unique, yet there are some things that most families are looking for in their basement remodels. Typically this will be to create a space that doesn’t exist elsewhere in the home, or can act as a break-out space.

Today we’re going to take a look at five common basement requirements that we have seen over the years. These Basement Reno Must Haves are sure to inspire your basement remodel!

TV Area

Have you dreamed of having a media room? Or a space entirely dedicated to watching sports at the weekend with friends? A TV area is a must have for you!

From large movies areas to recreational TV viewing, the options are endless when it comes to utilizing a basement. We’ve designed entire home theatres as well as comfy spaces that feel more like a family room.

The key to a basement TV area? Determine exactly what you’ll use the space for. If it’s a casual family room space then a fancy entertainment system may not be needed at all. But for full home theatres you’ll want top of the range equipment and soft, plush seating to enjoy.

Bar Area

For those that love to entertain year round, you may wish to create a bar area in the basement! It could be a large formal bar, or even a small dry bar.

From our experience, most of our clients are looking for a place to be able to serve drinks and snacks without the need of going upstairs to the kitchen. A bar area is perfect for keeping the necessities right where the action is.

Bathroom

A small bathroom in the basement is a popular request from our clients. Not only is it great for movie nights, they are convenient for when guests stay over too.

When a bathroom is a requirement here, we always recommend installing a shower for guests. It doesn’t need to be extravagant or large, just big enough for the purpose and needs.

Game Area

Some of the families we’ve worked with love to play board games and wanted a basement area dedicated to playing them with family and friends. A table and set of chairs is required here, which can also double up as a dining area too.

Other games could be a ping pong table, billiard table, and even arcade games! If you enjoy playing games, the basement is the perfect place to create a space dedicated to it.

For larger basements, you can even combine many of these different areas to create a dynamic and multi-purpose basement.

Work Out Area

Another popular choice is using the basement as a gym. As the basement is separate from the rest of the house it’s the perfect area to create a space dedicated to working out.

Over the years, we’ve had clients ask for a small area for their treadmill and yoga mat, while others wanted a fully equipped home gym.
