Heating Options

The most crucial way of adding extra warmth into your home is through efficient heat sources. Many homeowners install fireplaces into their homes to provide a specific look, however they do provide a fantastic source of heat.

There are lots of different fireplace options on the market, with the most popular being: electric, gas, or wood burners. Read our full guide on Adding A Fireplace To Your Home where we take you through all the possible options and the design considerations to take into account.

Aside from fireplaces, adding freestanding space heaters and energy efficient radiators will help to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the home.

Window Treatments

Did you know that the window treatments you choose can help to insulate your home? Yes – it’s true! There are some fantastic thermal window shades that help to create a stylish look while keeping heat within the space. With so many different fabrics and colors to choose from, there are options for any room in the home.

When choosing curtains for the living room or bedrooms, consider thermal lined curtains or blackout ones to help keep as much heat inside the room as possible. These types of curtains also prevent sunlight from shining through into the space which is particularly helpful for summer nights and movie afternoons.

Flooring

One aspect that you may not have considered concerning heating up your home, or indeed the insulation or retention of it, is the flooring! Hardwood, stone, or tiled floors will feel cold underfoot unless they have radiant heating underneath. This can be costly to install unless you can incorporate it into the design and plans for a new build home.

The best flooring for insulating any space is carpet, however this isn’t suitable for every space. Where hardwood, stone, or tiled floors are a necessity (think kitchen, bathrooms, hallways, laundry room etc) area rugs and carpet runners can be used to provide a soft cushioning and help to insulate the area better.

Wool rugs and carpets are the best for insulating heat in the home because of the thick and dense pile. It’s also extremely durable and comfortable underfoot too.

Decor

Another area of lesser known ways to heat up the home is through your decorative choices!

Adding plenty of soft furnishings will help to retain the heat in your spaces. Similarly to how curtains will insulate a room, soft furnishings will help to combat any cool surfaces to keep the area feeling warmer.
