Over the last twenty or so years we have had the pleasure of designing a wide variety of kitchens! Kitchens are undoubtedly one of the most complex spaces to design because of the sheer volume of elements that need to be considered. From countertops, cabinets, and hardware, to tile choices, careful spatial planning, and lighting!
Here at Innovatus Design, we pride ourselves on creating an overall project vision, then working meticulously through each detail by making hundreds of decisions before a design is presented. And for kitchen designs there is the added complexity of spatial planning to ensure each cabinet or appliance is positioned perfectly for the client.
As you will know if you’re a regular reader here, we absolutely love lighting design and how it can transform a space! So today we’re sharing Kitchen Lighting We Love featuring some of our favorite interior design projects!

Lantern Island Lighting
First up is one of our most recent projects that features these gorgeous brass lantern style pendants above the island!
The kitchen was designed with neutral light cabinets with a dark feature island. Through the backsplash tiles, we introduced some brass detailing that we then used for some of the feature lighting too. This helped to bring the whole design together and make this open plan kitchen feel cohesive!
We love how these two large lantern pendants sit beautifully above the island to bring elegance into the space.
5-Light Kitchen Pendant Light
This 5-light lantern style pendant light is ideal for above large kitchen islands to accentuate the shape and size!
Brass Lantern Pendant
Use a brass lantern pendant light to inject style and visual interest to your kitchen space.
Cylinder Lantern Pendant
Do you prefer a modern traditional feel to your home? This cylindrical pendant is ideal for that!

Feature Sink Lights
For the same project mentioned above, we used black and brass wall sconces to direct light downwards onto the countertop and sink area. In many states it is a code requirement to have a light placed above the kitchen sink to adequately illuminate the area.
Instead of choosing a light fixture that would blend in with its surroundings, we chose to make it a feature and add three wall sconces! The black and brass finish of these sconces reflects the other light fixtures chosen for the open plan space so they flow well together.
Textured Glass Pendant
This textured glass pendant light is perfect for using above the sink area in a kitchen to fully illuminate the space below!
Sculptural Pendant

Globe Pendants
In this kitchen project we worked on, we used globe-style pendants above the island. The overall design for this kitchen was simple elegance, using only subtle colors and neutrals to reimagine the space. We wanted something stylish but nothing too bold.
Globe pendants were the answer!
The pendants that worked with the design were these clear glass globes with large exposed bulbs within them. These look fabulous in the space and work fabulously with the hardware and other finishes!
Classic Globe Pendant
Use a classic globe pendant light like this brass one to create a simple yet effective kitchen island light display.
Wide Gold and Glass Pendant
This wide pendant light is a playful take on the classic globe pendant.
Black Pendant
Use a half globe pendant to direct lighting directly down towards the kitchen island itself.

We love the simplicity of this brass pendant as it will inject style into any kitchen!
Modern Black Kitchen Lighting
In one of our featured projects – the Baker’s Kitchen – the kitchen lighting includes a pendant above the sink, and a central ceiling light.
While our clients wanted a neutral refreshed look to their space, we chose a multi-colored metallic mosaic backsplash tile to add a subtle element of sophistication. From the colors of the tile, we selected lighting fixtures to coincide with this! The clients also loved the idea of having a matte black faucet which brought the whole design together.
The slim pendant light above the sink is a simple matte black fixture that blends effortlessly with the faucet and backsplash. And for the main ceiling light, sticking with the black finishes it was a more traditional light fixture that does the job perfectly.

For a more traditional home, this black 4-light pendant light is perfect for adding above the kitchen island!

Sleek Modern Pendant
This all-black kitchen design was for a new construction client that loved everything sleek and contemporary. They wanted to make a statement and emphasize the all-back design and range backsplash. So taking cues from the hardware and tones from the feature stone behind the range, we chose to find an island pendant light that featured black and brass as the materials.
We absolutely love the minimal pendant light here! It encompasses the design behind the whole kitchen and works perfectly with the space.
Mid-Century Inspired Kitchen Lighting
And finally – the super fun mid-century inspired modern kitchen for one of our long-standing clients! With a super durable cork flooring, curved island, and feature wood panels above, the pendant above the island needed to be equally as striking.
The sputnik light works so well in this kitchen design as it ties in with the other chrome accents, and really adds a playful touch to the space.
