Everything You Need to Know About Linen Curtains
We often get asked to create inviting and light-filled spaces for our clients. There’s one type of window treatment that we go back to time and time again because of its versatility and natural texture. And that is linen curtains!
The effortless elegance of linen curtains makes them our go-to choice for many of our projects, but how can you use them in your own home? And are there disadvantages to be aware of?
In this article we’re going to delve into why linen curtains are loved in the world of interior design, and share our practical tips and ideas on how to incorporate them into your home. Let’s take a closer look at Linen Curtains!

Why We Love Linen Curtains
We love linen curtains because they make light filtering any space a total breeze.
Not only is their natural texture visually pleasing, but linen curtains are a timeless choice for window treatment. Linen curtains can be made to look casual and informal, or elegant, while always injecting comfort into a space.
Linen curtains are available in a few different types, from natural flax, hemp, and European linens. All of which have been ethically sourced. Some have been dyed a darker color, while others may have some stripe patterns. The choices are vast.
How To Use Linen Curtains
Linen curtains can be used anywhere in the home! Our favorites are in living rooms and bedrooms.
We love to use linen curtains in bedrooms that have a blackout lining so an elegant look can be achieved, while still keeping full blackout for a more comfortable night’s sleep.
In living areas of the home, linen curtains can be left unlined! The natural texture of the fabric will filter light wonderfully, although if you’d rather have some privacy we would recommend a light filtering lining. This will also make sure there are no unwanted shadows or glare on TV’s!

Aspects To Be Aware Of
Linen as a whole does come with its own set of drawbacks. The fabric is known for its creasing and wrinkling, which often puts homeowners off using it in their homes. When using linen curtains, the creases and wrinkling may loosen the longer they have been hung up, and can easily be rectified with regular steaming.
Not only that, it’s important to be aware that linen can fade quicker than other fabrics and linen curtains tend to be a more expensive investment than other natural materials like cotton.
Unlined linen curtains won’t provide privacy because of the natural weave of the fabric so it’s important to consider a lining that is suitable for where you plan to hang them (light filtering or blackout for example).
Choosing Linen Curtains
There are lots of different options on the market nowadays that it can be difficult to understand which linen curtains are right for your home or space!
Firstly, it’s important to decide whether a lining will be beneficial for you or not. Are the curtains going in a bedroom, living area, or somewhere else in the home? We recommend blackout lining for bedrooms, light filtering ones for living rooms, and unlined ones for anywhere else in the home. This will help you narrow down the search!
Next up – plain or patterned? The most common linen curtains on the market are plain, so it’s a good idea to think about whether a light off-white or natural color is preferred or whether you’d like a dyed and darker curtain.

Final Thoughts
While linen curtains are an investment, we fully believe it’s a worthy one! Simply for the elegant and naturally casual look they help to achieve, linen curtains are timeless in any space of the home and will last for many years.
