With the festive season well and truly upon us, it’s a time for many of us to treat our loved ones with thoughtful gifts. It’s a time of year that for some requires a lot of pre-planning when it comes to budgeting for all the gifts, food and celebrations that comes with the festive month of December.
The time between Christmas and the New Year is a great time to start planning the following 6-12 months, both personally and professionally. This includes a wish list for any updates or home improvement projects you’d ideally like to happen over the following year.
With that in mind, this has got us thinking about design splurges, and more specifically what is worth spending that little bit extra on… It could be because the quality, craftsmanship, or overall finished result is that much better with some extra cash spent on them.
Let’s take a look at some of our favorite interior design splurges!
General
In general terms, we suggest to clients that they splurge on items or rooms that they spend the majority of their time in. This includes the bedroom, living room furniture, and built-in cabinetry. As these areas get the most use and time spent in, them it really is worth going the extra mile.
Another area to splurge on would be bathrooms as we spend so much of our time in them! And depending on which members of the family will be using them the most will influence the splurge greatly. For example, the master bathroom would be a good bathroom to invest more in and use premium materials because it will be well looked after. Cheap materials make for a cheap end result and we don’t recommend investing money when it will simply devalue the home.
Bedroom
The bedroom is one key area that is worth splurging on. In particular, it’s always worth spending extra on bed linen. As we spend a reasonable proportion of our 24 hour day sleeping or resting, it’s a beautiful thing to match up to a hotel quality bedroom. You can’t beat premium quality bedding and linen to go with it!
We always recommend to our clients that they spend a little bit extra on high-quality bedding. This helps to make the room look and feel more special, inviting, and comfortable for both themselves and guests. Not to mention the inevitably better night’s sleep!
Living Room
Undoubtedly one of the most important rooms in the home (aside from the bathroom and kitchen for practical reasons), the living room is somewhere to relax, entertain and even spend time resting when you’re feeling unwell. The living room is often one of the main hubs of a home.
The everyday sofa you have and use here is worth spending investing in because of the sheer amount of use it gets over the course of 10+ years. Invest in a highly regarded brand and good quality upholstery and your everyday sofa will last you a lifetime.
Bathrooms
Another area of the home that is used often is, of course, the bathroom. While we do recommend splurging on the master bathroom, it may not be such a great idea to do the same for the main family bathroom…
As adults, we are more likely to look after and maintain the high-quality finishes used in the master bathroom. Using high-quality tiles, finishes and materials will also create a welcoming sanctuary for you every day.
However, if you have young children you may want to reconsider splurging on their bathroom! And we say this purely as a precaution… Using more basic or simple tiles here will make it easier to maintain and avoid damage.
Integrated Cabinetry
Integrated built-ins and other permanent pieces that become part of the architecture of the home is always worth spending extra money on. By doing this you will guarantee a high-quality finish and superior craftsmanship. While it may be tempting to buy a cheap bookcase from IKEA in the interim, you cannot beat the beauty and quality of a built-in.
We hope you have enjoyed reading about our favorite interior splurges! Is there anything else you would add to this list of splurges? Next time we will be sharing our thoughts on things to save on, so stay tuned!
