Color plays a huge part in any interior design project and we’re even started a paint color article series to feature our favorite paint colors! The colors you choose in your home can have a huge affect on your mood and overall well-being.
There are lots of ways to use color in the home, with one of the most popular being paint colors! Often homeowners and interior designers will get creative with paint colors on both the walls and ceiling of a space. From two-tone looks to now – Color Drenching!
You may have seen or heard a little about Color Drenching on social media as it’s becoming increasingly popular! This article is the complete guide to Color Drenching. We’re going to discuss exactly what color drenching is, what to consider, where color drenching does and doesn’t work, and even what paint type to use!
Let’s get straight into it.
What is Color Drenching?
If you’re not on social media a lot you may not know what color drenching is.
Color drenching is a decorating trend that involves painting the walls, ceiling, and trim in the same color. You can even take this one step further by using accessories in the same color to finish off the space too!
This way of decorating is almost the opposite to traditional decorating where the ceiling is painted the same color as the trim and doors (often white). Color drenching is a bold statement.
Things to Consider with Color Drenching
Color drenching is not for the faint-hearted! Typically it involves using a deep and dark color that may be scary for some. You could use a lighter, more paired back tone to color drench instead though.
It’s important to make sure you absolutely love the color you plan to use for drenching a room because if you choose a dark color it will be more difficult to change back to a lighter tone if you decide you don’t like it. If you can, test the color on all four walls of the room before committing to it.
Color drenching is best suited to spaces on the smaller side so it’s more impactful. This will also make a bigger statement.
Where to Color Drench
You can actually color drench any room in the home! It all comes down to the color you choose and whether it will create the right feeling for you.
For example, if you’re looking to create a cozy and intimate setting for a living room, bedroom, or dining room, then a deep and dark color would be fantastic for using in this way.
However for kids bedrooms, nurseries, bathrooms, or kitchens, you may wish to choose a softer color.
You could also consider color drenching in a more laid back way. Instead of painting the walls, ceiling, trim, and door the same color, you could create a two-tone look between walls and ceiling, and the trim and doors.
What Colors Are Good for Color Drenching?
The most popular colors for color drenching are definitely deep, rich, and bold colors.
Dark blue, maroon, rich burgundy, dark gray – and black! – are all very popular colors for this type of decorating.
For those that prefer a more subtle look, softer tones like lavender purple, pink, sky blue, and sage green all work equally well.
Paint Types / Sheen Levels
As with any interior decorating project it’s important to understand paint sheen levels and which type is suited to the different surfaces in a room. Paint sheen levels will also help to ensure any space that has been color drenched to have some dimension.
Even though you’ll be using the same color throughout the space, using different sheen levels of this same color will prevent the space from feeling flat.
As a general rule, we would recommend using a flat finish for the ceiling, eggshell or matte for the walls, and semi-gloss or satin for the trimwork.
