Trend Alert: Induction Ranges

The team and I had the pleasure of attending the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, and were able to pick up on a few up-and-coming interior design trends for kitchens and bathrooms! One of these trends is Induction Ranges! They were everywhere, and they have really grown in features since first hitting the market! We were able to learn more about them and what makes them a great option for homeowners.  Let’s take a closer look!

Why we love induction cooktops!

We love induction ranges because they are super sleek and provide a much better – and quicker! – method of cooking, than a conventional stove. They are also more energy efficient than conventional stoves because of the induction technology that is used.

Induction cooktops look similar to the typical glass-top electric ranges, but they cook via a magnetic field. This is concentrated to the cooking rings (usually 4 or 5 depending on the model and size), and the electrical current flows directly from these fields, through the glass to heat up the magnetic cookware used.

How to use induction ranges.

It’s relatively straightforward to use induction ranges in your home. Instead of using a conventional range, consider installing an induction one instead! During installation, it is important to have the gas flow stopped as it will no longer be necessary.

More advanced models even have phone apps that program temperature controls and cooking programs right into them. We had a ton of fun at KBIS testing them out!

What to watch for.

There are some considerations to take into account when thinking of installing an induction range in your kitchen…

Firstly, cooking on induction can feel very different than with gas. Some cooking enthusiasts love to see the flame and immediate feedback from turning the knob up or down with a gas cooktop, and unfortunately no electric or induction top can replicate that feel. If you know someone with an induction range or cooktop, we recommend trying it out first to see how you like it. New appliances can be expensive so it’s important to make the right decision for you and how you like to cook.

Speaking of cost, it can be expensive to make the change from a conventional gas range to an induction one. Aside from the cost of the appliance itself, you may need to change your cookware to ensure it will work with the induction technology. You can easily check if your existing cookware will work with induction by seeing if a magnet strongly sticks to the bottom of your pots. If it does, then it will work with induction.

Ways to make this trend last in your home

Induction ranges can last many years in your home so long as it is the right decision for you.

The first step for ensuring your new induction range lasts a lifetime, is to choose a reputable brand that you can trust. Does the appliance come with a long warranty or guarantee? Always check these details to ensure the appliance is covered.
