Trundle Beds
Over the last few years, I have worked with a huge number of homeowners that have requested a multi-use space. You may even have one yourself! A multi-use space is a room that needs to function in different ways according to altering seasons, or lifestyle changes.
A great example of this, is a client who requested a home office design that would incorporate ways for a guest to stay over. While they don’t typically have guests every weekend, they wanted to have space or allowances available in order to have people stay more regularly, while keeping a functional work from home office.
The solution? A daybed with a trundle bed!
You may not have heard of the term “trundle bed” or be unfamiliar with it, which is where this article comes in! I’m going to take you through everything you need to know about Trundle Beds!
What is a Trundle Bed?
A trundle bed is essentially a 2-in-1 design solution! They are a low-profile bed with wheels on, that fits perfectly underneath a standard bed frame. Imagine a standard twin bed, but within the base is a drawer that fits another twin mattress! Pretty cool right?
You can now find daybeds with trundles, or standard twin beds with a trundle to suit your needs.
Who is a Trundle Bed For?
Anyone can use a trundle bed, which is why they are a great option for rooms that need more than one use. Such as a guest bedroom or home office!
In the scenario of my client that I mentioned earlier, the trundle bed was underneath a daybed in their home office. This now allows them to work throughout the week, and have guests stay over when needed too!
Trundle beds are ideal for children, and adults. If your kids love having friends over to stay for slumber parties, a trundle bed could be a good solution. It will enable you to have more of their friends over to stay, without compromising on the bedroom style or floor space!
Why Choose a Trundle Bed?
Trundle beds have a lot of advantages. The main advantage is saving space! They are perfect for small bedrooms or guest rooms as they take up less floor space, thus providing an extra sleeping area without compromising on the main room design or floor area.
They are also super easy to use! Simply roll out the trundle with a push-in and push-out motion, et voila! Another sleeping space has been created super easily and quickly too.
And lastly, trundle beds are also affordable. They are typically more cost-effective than a traditional bed option which makes them perfect for those on a tight budget.
What to Watch Out for
An important consideration to keep in mind with a trundle bed is that they aren’t recommended for use as a main bed for someone. This is because the mattress needed is much thinner than a typical one, which means there is less support and comfort than a typical bed.
How to Choose a Trundle Bed
First, it’s important to consider the style of the room. Is it more traditional in design, or leaning more towards a modern space? This will make it easier to narrow down the options when shopping for a trundle bed.
Next, you’ll want to decide whether the space is better suited to a daybed with a trundle, or a standard twin bed with a trundle underneath. For spaces that will be doubling up, such as a home office or basement area, a daybed may work best because it will look like a sofa when not in use. Whereas a kids’ room will look better with a standard twin with a trundle underneath.
Then you can put the above together! And find something that works effortlessly with your space.
