A New Year will soon be upon us and we have been asked to contribute to many online interior design publications to share our thoughts on interior design elements and future interior design trends. Most notably is about the kitchen and the future of materials used in the heart of all our homes.

We are extremely fortunate to work on a wide variety of projects, and of late a lot of new kitchen designs! This means our team needs to be creative and use attention to detail when space planning the perfect kitchen design that will stand the test of time for our clients.

One underrated area of the kitchen is the backsplash!

For homeowners renovating their homes, the backsplash is often left until one of the last decisions because it seems tiny compared to others. The backsplash not only protects our walls, it elevates a kitchen design completely!

In this article, we take you on a journey through the future of kitchen design focusing on kitchen backsplash trends for 2024 and beyond.

Let’s take a look!

Blending Backsplashes

First up, is blending backsplashes which are set to be hit in 2024.

Traditionally, backsplashes have changed behind the range to create an accent while the rest of the kitchen was uniform. But as the minimalist movement kicked into high gear, this shifted so the backsplash was consistent throughout. This was short lived and now blended backsplashes are making a comeback.

The difference in 2024 is that instead of an inset feature design, expect to see the tile change up or the material change completely from the main areas of the kitchen to behind the range. For example, stone behind the range and ceramic tile elsewhere.

This accent material will be used in other parts of the kitchen as well to tie large open plan spaces together. Wine bars, dry bars, and even the back of glass door cabinets will have a splash of the accent tile!

Herringbone Tiles

The way we use traditional tiles is evolving. For many new kitchen and bathroom designs, tiles have been stacked horizontally or vertically, instead of the traditional zags. Herringbone tiles are among these new trends that we will see being used in many ways.

Herringbone tiles add an updated feel to any space while injecting visual texture, sophistication, and movement.

Warm Neutrals

Have you noticed the shift from cool grays to shades of beige, and warm off-whites yet? While this is a much bigger movement for interior design trends this year, into next and beyond, we will see this shift towards warm tones become even more prominent in 2024.

Kitchen design as a whole will see a welcoming new look with a warm neutral palette that will feel like you’re getting a warm hug. Instead of a stark and sterile kitchen, we will see more balanced kitchen designs that give a more relaxed and calmer feel.

For kitchen backsplashes, this means new tiles and mosaics that nod towards this trend. Mosaics will feature a multitude of colors and tones to help bring warmth into the space, and we will see manufacturers bringing out timeless colorways.

Shades of Blue

Last but not least, are shades of blue!

Blue is a key color that makes up a timeless color palette, and we’ve been using it throughout our clients’ homes for many years now. Even Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore have selected shades of blue as their color of the year for 2024!

While navy blues will be popular in 2024, we predict that sea glass green will become a regular too.

So whether it’s choosing a new wall color for a bedroom, or backsplash tile for a kitchen or bathroom, shades of blue will be everywhere next year. We particularly love using mosaics that feature different shades of blue to create a striking, bold, yet sophisticated look.
