How to Recognize a Subway Tile

Subway tiles are rectangular and can vary in size from 3″x6″ to 3″x12″. They are usually glazed ceramic or porcelain tiles that are extremely practical and durable for a variety of uses. With lots of different colors on the market now, you’re sure to find something to match your design and overall style.

We love to use subway tile in both kitchens and bathrooms. They are great for the kitchen backsplash, while in bathrooms they are fantastic for using on shower walls! Traditionally subway tiles are arranged in a brickwork pattern, but we love to get creative with them and install them in different patterns. You can choose a chevron, herringbone style, or something more fun like the blue tiled pattern below!

Subway Tile Fun Facts:

Subway tiles were most notably used to design the first New York subway stations, incorporating the distinguishing 3″x6″ tiles as a functional and aesthetic element.  The ceramic surfaces are easy to clean and easy on the eye. It’s not surprising that they gained popularity in the 1920’s and 1930’s for use in kitchens and bathrooms.

Nowadays, subway tiles are available in different colors, finishes, and sizes! Making them an excellent choice for using in kitchens and bathrooms. They are extremely versatile and add a timeless look to any space.
